最近許多學校舉辦校慶（school’s anniversary celebration）和運動會（sports day），不少校友（alumni）選擇這天返回母校（alma mater）探望師長、看看學弟妹在運動上的精彩表現，順便辦場同學會。
在美國，校友返校節（homecoming week）是高中和大學的年度盛世，一般在九月底或十月初舉行。學校不止邀請校友回娘家，還舉辦一系列活動，讓校友和全校師生一同慶祝。常見的活動有扮裝日（dress up day）、舞會（dance）、遊行（parade）以及美式足球賽（football game），有的學校則是舉辦籃球賽或冰上曲棍球賽。
