She not only has a best actress Oscar on herrésumé, but is also the highest grossing female action hero ever. How has shemanaged all this at such a young age? “Even as far back as when I started acting at 14,” she says, “I know I’ve never considered failure.”

Growing up in Louisville, Kentucky, Lawrence persuaded her parents to take her to New York to find a talent agent when she was just 14 years old. But a talent scoutspotted her first on a Manhattan street, and the offers began rolling in. Eager to start her acting career, Lawrence studied hard and graduated from high school two years early. She first appeared on a TV sitcom before her breakout performance in the 2010 independent film Winter’s Bone. Her portrayal of a young woman caring for her younger siblings and mentally ill mother earned Lawrence her first Oscar nomination.

Lawrence didn’t have to wait long for her first Oscar win. In 2012, she starred in David O. Russell’s Silver Linings Playbook, impressing moviegoers and critics alike as the sexy yet vulnerable Tiffany Maxwell. The Academy was also impressed, awarding Lawrence the best actress Oscar. And her performance as heroine Katniss Everdeen led The Hunger Games to huge box office success that same year. In 2013, Lawrence teamed up with Russell again for American Hustle, earning a third Oscar nomination and cementing her status as a bona fide Hollywood star.
